Hiking by Lake Hallstatt: East Shore Trail or Echerntal?
4 min read
Choose the east-shore trail for an easy linear lake walk; choose Echerntal for waterfalls, climbing and a much harder final section. Both are marketed around Hallstatt, but they demand different ability and transport planning. The east shore is across the water from the village, while Echerntal starts beside Hallstatt. If you would rather cover the east shore with a local guide, our pick is the guided lakeside bike tour, which starts at Steeg-Gosau station like the walk.
East shore: easier and linear
The regional tour portal lists 9.7 kilometres from Steeg-Gosau station to Obertraun and a walking time of 2 hours 36 minutes; hallstatt.net splits it at Untersee, Seeraunzn and Hallstatt railway station into four sections that add up to about three hours. The terrain is classified as easy and includes a suspension bridge above the lake’s deepest section, with views back towards Hallstatt.
This route needs a return plan because it is not a village loop. Train and boat can connect sections, but current timetables decide what works. The one-hour section from Hallstatt station to Obertraun is useful when you want a shorter sample. Dogs must be kept on a lead.
Echerntal: a route with two difficulty levels
The official Echerntal circuit starts and ends at parking area P2. It lists 5.7 kilometres, 2 hours 30 minutes and 558 metres of ascent and descent. Most of the circuit is marked blue, but the final approach to Waldbachstrub is classified as a black mountain trail by the Austrian Alpine Club definition.
That final distinction changes the recommendation. The black section can include fall exposure and requires surefootedness, a head for heights, fitness and suitable footwear. Snow, ice, wind and wet ground can make it harder. Do not use a general “family trail” description as proof that every branch is easy.
Weather and season
The Echerntal theme trail may close in heavy snow or ice. Waterfall flow also changes with rainfall, so a named waterfall does not guarantee the same spectacle every day. The east shore can be useful in late autumn or low-snow periods, but wet leaves, stones and early darkness still require planning. Check current route closures before leaving.
Walking or cycling?
The scenic Hallstatt lake bicycle ride costs €179 per person and, according to its booking page, meets at Steeg-Gosau station, the same start as the east-shore walk. It follows the quieter shore via Obertraun to Hallstatt; bike, helmet and guide are included, and the full loop covers up to about 24 kilometres with around 220 metres of climbing in 3.5 to 4 hours. Its existence does not mean every hiking path permits bicycles.
Recommendation
Pick the east shore for a first easy walk and organise the return before starting. Pick Echerntal when you want a hillier half-day and are prepared to turn around before the black section. Waldbachstrub is not a compulsory finish: the correct endpoint is wherever your experience, weather and footing still support a safe return. For the east shore with a guide and a bike instead of on foot, book the lakeside bike tour from Steeg-Gosau.
